The Spookiest Ghost Town I’ve Visited

The Spookiest Ghost Town I’ve Visited

The spookiest ghost town I’ve visited thus far is definitely Harshaw, Arizona.

My family and I were exploring the nearby town of Patagonia one day when we decided to drive the 8 miles to view what remained of the Harshaw Townsite. (I always have my map out and am always trying to squeeze in one more site) We had heard there wasn’t much left of the town but decided to go anyway.

It all started off relatively normal, just a slightly curvy, paved two way road. It was even a little fun for the kids as we passed numerous long horn cattle very close to the road.

It was late afternoon and the sun was definitely beginning to settle and take the shine off the day. Looking back, I realized I was “getting a feeling” very early on but trying to play it cool because I’m quite the worry wart.

It wasn’t long before we saw the first sign that started to alert us we may not want to continue. It read “Travel Caution. Smuggling and illegal immigrants may be encountered in this area.” Both my husband and I looked at each other, but not wanting to alert the kids we just kept quiet.

The drive wasn’t long but for two people who are very much into safety, I have no idea why we didn’t turn around. The drive just kept getting spookier…and the road less welcoming. (Mind you, I’m from the country, dirt roads don’t usually bother me) There was another travel caution sign, weird turn offs…it all just felt very isolated and we were both feeling like something was off but we kept driving because we were so close.

Upon arriving to the small clearing of the townsite, the first thing we saw was a shady looking vehicle sitting under a tree. Our radar was up… that was all we needed. We turned the car around, I rolled my window down, got the quick shot of the building you see above and we drove off. We were definitely not interested in sticking around. Something told us the car sitting there was looking out or waiting for something.

Feeling relieved, we headed back to Patagonia. About halfway there we suddenly came up on police blocking our lane, who had pulled over a large semi truck. I am not lying to you when I tell you the back of the semi was open and it was FULL of immigrants. I even locked eyes with one of the boys watching us drive by. We were in complete disbelief and shock! We had just driven through that way!!!! We just felt awful!

Anyway, so many of our adventures are fun and inspiring but this town, unfortunately, will not be on our repeat list.

*Sincere apologies to anyone who loves this town and does not agree with my story. This is just my family and I’s experience on one particular day. I’m sure there are many other people who have had a much different experience.
